Suisun Valley

The Suisun Valley AVA, an Amerivan Viticulture Area (AVA) located in Solano County, bordering Napa Valley to the west.

The valley itself lies between The Vaca Mountains which separate the Napa Valley from Suisun Valley and the Mount George Range.

It is roughly 3 miles by 8 miles and consists of about 15,000 acres, of which about 3,000 are planted with grapes.

The weather is dominated by the coolness of the San Francisco Bay and the San Pablo Bay as well as the inland breezes from the Pacific Ocean which are constant for most of the growing season. The soil is a combination of several types of loam.

Loam

Loam is found in fertile land and feels soft and rich. It’s easy to work and there are many different types of loam soils, depending on the dominant “ingredient” - such as: sandy loam, silty loam, clay loam, sandy clay loam, silty clay loam, gravelly loam and more.

A great soil for vineyards, loam generally contains significant nutrients (but less than clay), is gritty, moist, and retains water.

They can also inhibit roots from growing exceptionally large, giving more energy to the vine and grapes.
